Filming in Spain

Since the mid-twentieth century, Spain has established itself as one of the favourite destinations for the filming of major film productions.

History

Legendary films such as  David Lean’s Doctor Zhivago,  John Huston’s Moby Dick,  Stanley Kramer’s Pride and Passion,  Nicholas Ray’s 55 Days in Beijing,  Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun or Sergio Leone‘s iconic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly chose  Spain as the setting. This success is due to four fundamental pillars:

The diversity and quality of its locations

From desert landscapes to lush forests and cities steeped in history.

The professionalism of local technicians

Formed since the first international productions that arrived in 1954.

A privileged climate

That allows you to shoot 365 days a year.

Physical and Legal Security

It attracts more and more productions because of the guarantees it offers.

Destiny

One of the great promoters of Spain as a film destination was Samuel Bronston. This legendary producer not only shot hits such as El Cid (with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren) and The Fall of the Roman Empire (with Alec Guinness and Sophia Loren), but also built the Chamartín Studios, considered the largest of their time.

spaghetti western

The 1960s marked a before and after with the rise of the “spaghetti western”. Sergio Leone’s Dollar Trilogy, consisting of A Fistful of Dollars, Death Had a Price and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, put Clint Eastwood in stardom. Almeria, with its desert landscapes, was transformed into the Wild West thanks to exterior sets that, today, are still used for western-style filming.

Later productions, such as  Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, also chose Almeria. More recently, Game of Thrones took advantage of Spain’s diverse locations, filming in Almeria, Seville and other regions to recreate the kingdoms imagined by George R.R. Martin.

Later years

Spain in today's major productions

In recent years, Spain continues to be a magnet for international series and films. Productions such as The Witcher, The Crown, Westworld, Doctor Who, Black Mirror and The Snow Society have used Spanish locations. In addition, national hits such as Money Heist have demonstrated the country’s talent both in front of and behind the cameras.

Spain has become a world reference for film and television thanks to its cultural richness, variety of landscapes and excellent infrastructures. Whether you’re looking for evocative deserts, historic cities, or unique natural landscapes, Spain has it all.
